ASTM D2939 Metal Panels & Masks

Metal panels and substrates used in testing by ASTM D2939 (Emulsified Bitumens Used as Protective Coatings). ASTM D2939 describes various test methods to sample and test emulsified bitumens. Many of these tests use the same or similar test panels or substrates.

Metal Panels:

  • 150 mm x 150 mm x 0.3-0.4 mm (6" x 6" x 0.012-0.016")
  • Available with as-rolled surface finish or polished on one face with 00 steel wool
  • Used in sections: 13, 14, 15, 16*, 19, 20, 26**, 27**
  • *Section 16 requires aluminum metal panels
  • **Section 26 and 27 require metal panels that are 1/8” thick

Brass Mask:

  • 150 mm x 150 mm (6" x 6")
  • 1.6 mm (1/16") or 1/8" thick with 100 mm (4") square opening in center
  • Used in sections: 13, 16, 19, 25, 26

Black Iron Panel

  • 300 mm x 300 mm x 1.6 mm (12” x 12” x 1/16”)
  • Cold rolled carbon steel with a clean, rust-free surface
  • Used in sections: 17, 18

Ceramic Tile Panel

  • 150 mm x 150 mm x 9.5-13 mm (6” x 6” x 3/8-1/2”) (approximate)
  • Unglazed white tile with absorption range of 10-18%
  • Used in section: 25

Metal Ring

  • 50 mm (2”) diameter and 25 mm (1”) in height (approximate)
  • Used in section: 25

Here are the test methods in ASTM D2939 that use metal panels or other substrates:

  • Section 13: Drying Time
  • Section 14: Resistance to Heat
  • Section 15: Resistance to Water
  • Section 16: Flexibility
  • Section 17: Brush-Application Behavior
  • Section 18: Spray-Application Behavior
  • Section 19: Wet Flow
  • Section 20: Direct Flame Test
  • Section 25: Resistance to Kerosine
  • Section 26: Resistance to Impact
  • Section 27: Resistance to Impact After Accelerated Weathering
